Current dietary patterns are both associated to a poor state of health of the population worldwide, and to harmful consequences on the environment. The profile of a healthy diet with a low environmental impact is characterized by the regular consumption of foods of vegetable origin, fresh and poorly processed, where fruits and vegetables occupy a key place.

Food systems must be able to provide healthy, safe and accessible food to the population, and in this approach, the production and consumption of fruits and vegetables, in addition to contributing to improve eating habits, plays a crucial role in the development of sustainable food systems.

In addition, given the growing scientific evidence on food and its impact on health, as well as the continued development of good practices in health promotion, it is important to create a framework to exchange data, experiences and practices in the promotion of fruits and vegetables consumption, to implement national programs to promote their consumption, within the framework of public health promotion strategies.

Likewise, the horticultural sector, as well as all the food producing sectors, need proposals to face the challenges that affect the agri-food sector and the environment to supply nutritious, safe and quality fruits and vegetables to a growing population on a planet with limited resources. From the good practices of efficient and sustainable use of soils and natural resources, innovation and improvement of production, storage, processing, commercialization, reduction of losses and waste, to the responsibility of consumers, are key agents to strengthen, preserve or restore food systems.

On the other hand, highlighting the role of the fruit and vegetables sector within the framework of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, will contribute to promote the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables proposed for 2021, within the framework of the Decade of United Nations Action on Nutrition (2016-2026).

Thus, AIAM5 Global Alliance for the Promotion of Fruit and Vegetable Consumption "5 a day", within the framework of the 20th Anniversary of the Association "5 a day Spain", and in the context of the International Fruits and Vegetables Sector Fair " Fruit Attraction ", to be held in Madrid - Spain, from October 22nd to 23rd, 2020, invites entities, stakeholders, agents, scientists and the entire fruit and vegetables sector and its value chain to the meeting -“5 a day” key to global health-.
